The Canvas Gradebook is being updated for Fall 2019, but instructors can already try it out. While the updated version of the Gradebook still functions mostly like the current version, Canvas has listened to instructors' feedback on how to enhance the Gradebook in this updated version.
Take a look at Canvas's New Gradebook Resources, watch the video below for an overview of the changes, or read on to learn about the major enhancements.
Major Enhancements Include:
Grade Posting Policy
Instructors can now "mute" all their assignments in a course at once, preventing students from being able to see grades until the instructor is ready to release them. Previously, instructors had to "mute" assignments one at a time. Canvas now refers to "muted" grades as "hidden" grades and "unmuted" grades as "visible" grades.
Late Policies
Instructors can now set grading rules for late and missing submissions. These include setting a default grade for past-due submissions or setting automatic deductions for late submissions, such as a 10% grade reduction for every day an assignment remains past due.
When Can I Try the New Gradebook?
You can try out the New Gradebook now! Activate it in any Canvas course by:
- Navigating to Settings in your course
- Clicking the Feature Options tab
- Toggling the button next to New Gradebook (when activated, a green checkmark will appear)
When Will the New Gradebook Become the Default?
The New Gradebook will replace the current version as the default in Canvas on the following dates:
- August 20, 2019 - Northwestern University in Qatar
- August 30, 2019 - Pritzker School of Law
- September 3, 2019 - All of Northwestern (at the end of the day)
Fall quarter Grading and Assignments workshops offered by Teaching & Learning Technologies will cover the updates to the Gradebook.
